Summer Plumbing Tips – Morris County, NJ

Faucet leakage

With the summer just beginning, Zeek Plumbing will walk you through your summer plumbing checklist to ensure you can focus on your family, friends, and fun rather than your plumbing!

1: Outdoor Hose bibs

Check all of your outdoor hose bibs on both the interior and exterior of your home. If your hose bibs were not properly drained during the winter, the water line may have frozen and or may have burst. Do not worry, if the line is broken and needs to be repaired, call Zeek Plumbing at 866-635-0200

2. Proper Disposal of Food/Garbage

Zeek Plumbing hopes all of our customers are enjoying the great weather with friends and family. However, with all the grilling and cooking, make sure to dispose of food products properly. Do not throw all food waste products into your garbage disposal. Do not pour grease into the drains, it will solidify and clog your drains. Remove paper towels and wipes from all bathrooms to prevent guests from flushing them down the toilet. Wipes and paper towels will cause a backup as they do not break apart like toilet paper does. We tell all of our customers to never flush anything down the toilet besides waste and toilet paper.

3. Sump Pumps

Everybody knows the saying, April showers bring May flowers, but with heavy rain, you want to make sure your sump pump is working properly. If your sump pump pit is not covered, you can pour water into the pit, and assuming it is working, it will pump the water out. If your sump pump pit is covered, Zeek Plumbing can remove the cover and check it is working properly for you. We recommend checking your sump pump if you will be leaving your home for an extended period. The last thing you want is to return from vacation to 4” of water in your basement. Zeek Plumbing does not recommend installing a backup pump unless you have a generator. Battery backup pumps only run for a few hours before running out of power.

4. Clean Gutters/Underground Drains

Following the fall and winter seasons, there will be leaves, dirt, and debris in your gutters and underground drains. If they are not properly cleaned, water will build up and not drain away from your home. Gutters and underground drains are paramount to keeping your foundation intact since they direct all the water away from your foundation. Please call our office at 866-635-0200, if you are interested in having your underground drains snaked

5. Check Washing Machine and Dryer Vents

Contrary to popular belief, more laundry is done in the Summer than Winter months. Kids are getting dirty outside and everybody is sweating due to the heat. Check the discharge drain for the washing machine, assuming it is exposed, to confirm it is secured inside the standpipe. Check the dryer vents as lint and debris gets stuck in the line and becomes a fire hazard.

6. Check Outdoor Sprinkler Systems

Turn your sprinkler zones on one at a time and inspect all of your sprinkler heads for leaks. If debris is present, clean the dirt and debris to allow the head to function properly. Sprinkler systems can cause excessive water usage if the leaks are not addressed. If the leak is underground, it can damage your foundation and kill the grass on your property.
