Water Heater Leaking, Causes & Solutions

Hot water heater leak

Water heaters are the most reliable appliances for warm showers, sanitized dishes, and cozy living spaces. However, even the most dependable devices can face unexpected challenges, and one of the most typical troubles homeowners encounter is a water heater leaking. This blog post explores the possible causes and solutions with troubleshooting steps to address this issue.

Is your water heater leaking? What can you do to fix it?

Water heater leaks cannot be fixed, assuming the tank is leaking. The unit will start to leak from the bottom over time as sediment builds up in the tank and erodes away. If the copper water line above the tank is leaking, that can be repaired by a licensed plumber.

How do you prevent that from happening?

You can have your water tested and add a water softener to your main water line. This will help soften the water and remove sediment that can build up in the unit, causing it to deteriorate. It will also extend the life of other fixtures such as washing machines, dishwashers, shower heads, etc.

Is a leaking water heater dangerous?

Yes, but it depends on the amount of water. There is exposed wiring and electrical components that can cause harm if compromised.

However, your water heater is not going to explode because it got wet. See the attached picture of incorrect venting installed on a water heater, which is much more dangerous. This can cause major carbon monoxide issues, which can be very harmful.

What to do if your water heater is leaking from the bottom?

For such emergencies, it is crucial to connect with residential Professional plumbers. The unit must be replaced, You can contact our office at 866-635-0200. I have no hot water in my shower, but other fixtures have hot water?

If this is the case, the cartridge most likely needs to be replaced inside the shower valve. Over time the threads and the stems wear out and do not allow you to open the hot water controls. If other fixtures have hot water, your water heater is working properly. When a water heater does not work, you will not have hot water at any fixture.

Are tankless water heaters better than storage tank water heaters?

They are more efficient, but Zeek Plumbing does not always recommend them. The tankless units make hot water on demand, not continuously. If you have multiple showers, a washing machine, and a dishwasher running, it will not be able to keep up with that demand. It also does not store water for use, so you do not have nearly the amount of sediment built up as a tank unit.
