How to Winterize Your Plumbing Before Your Winter Getaway

Zeek Plumbing can ensure your home is winterized and your plumbing is protected before you leave for your vacation.
Winterize your plumbing to avoid plumbing surprises

Before you escape to a warmer climate during the frigid weeks of winter, it would be wise to prepare your home for the freezing temperatures. It is helpful to make yourself a winterizing plumbing checklist. This way you can mark the tasks off as they are completed to ensure that you will not have any awful surprises upon your return.

Steps for Winterizing Your Plumbing

  1. Turn off the water supply – Close the main valve or supply to your home (usually located in the basement or laundry room of the house).
  2. Open all faucets – By opening all the faucets, inside and outside of the house, all water will drain from the pipelines.
  3. Turn off the heat source (or boiler) and water heater – In most cases, you can turn off the furnace by switching off the electrical power supply. If your water heater is gas, turn off the gas valve. If the water heater is electric or oil, turn off the power at the switch.
  4. Drain the water heater – Discharge the tank into the floor drain until it is empty. If there is not a floor drain, connect a garden hose to the tank and run it to the outside of the house.
  5. Remove as much water as possible from toilets – Flush toilets and try to remove all of the water from the tank and the toilet bowl. If some water remains, add antifreeze to prevent any water from freezing and cracking the toilet.
  6. Check sink and tub drains – Add some antifreeze to each one to prevent water from freezing and cracking the traps.
The licensed plumbers at Zeek Plumbing can winterize your home for you before the cold weather damages any of your plumbing.
Frozen pipes are a disaster that can be easily avoided

Prevent Freezing Pipes

The most important thing to do before you leave home for an extended stay during the winter months is to remove water from within the pipes. This will prevent them from freezing. If a pipe freezes, and then bursts, it can cause costly damage to your home. This is definitely not the nightmare you would like to encounter when you return from your relaxing vacation. In order to prevent freezing pipes, follow the guidelines listed:

  • Turn your heat down, not off. Keep your heat set to a minimum of 60 degrees while you are away to protect pipes against the cold.
  • Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to the warmer home’s temperatures.
  • Inspect the exterior of the house and seal any visible cracks with caulk or spray foam.
  • Insulate pipes that are vulnerable to freezing wit insulation sleeves or slip-on foam pipe insulation. Plastic piping is more resilient to freezing than old copper or steel pipes.
  • Insulate the crawl space and block all vents with cardboard or wood that lead to the outside.

We have a fairly new radiant heat system that was not installed by Zeek. All of a sudden we had no heat on the second floor. Rich and Ryan immediately determined that the pressure tank originally installed was not the correct one, replaced that part and had the system up and running for us. We had another issue a few days later. Rich returned immediately and took care of the problem at no cost to us.We are very happy to have found Zeek (and Rich) and we look forward to working with them in the future!

Very professional very fast and very friendly. Over all amazing service by Bill. He took the time to do the job right n make sure it was working properly without wasting time. And took the time to explain what was causing the problems. Would recommend to anyone who needs a plumber. Extremely satisfied.Update, 2 days later had issues and called them back, with in 24 hrs they came back to resolve the problem. Sent multiple guys to find where the issue was in the system. Located a bad pipe and replaced it. All is flowing good now thankyou so much for working with us to resolve this issue.

We are sooo happy with our experiences with Zeek! We had them out twice - they did a bunch of repairs for us and then when it turned out the problem was deeper than we thought they came back and stuck with it until they figured it out. They were professional, neat, safe and thorough. Huge thanks to Rich for coming out to diagnose the problem and the whole team for hanging in until it was fixed!

We woke up to see a leak coming through our kitchen ceiling, and we feared the worst. Tim and RJ were great. They diagnosed and solved the issue quickly and gave me a very fair price. Very considerate and professional. Highly recommended these guys.

My family and I cannot thank Zeek Plumbing enough! We had a horrible experience with Best Buy trying to get our new washer/dryer installed when we moved into our new house. The team Best Buy hired was a no call/no show twice! Then they said they didn't have the parts they needed, so we ended up canceling their service. We finally came across Zeek and Bill was able to come out the next morning. He was very nice and professional and clearly an expert in his field. The job was done perfectly within a few hours and now our new home is up and running like a well oiled machine. We will definitely be calling Zeek back for anything needed in the future. Thank you!
