Before you escape to a warmer climate during the frigid weeks of winter, it would be wise to prepare your home for the freezing temperatures. It is helpful to make yourself a winterizing plumbing checklist. This way you can mark the tasks off as they are completed to ensure that you will not have any awful surprises upon your return.
Steps for Winterizing Your Plumbing
Turn off the water supply – Close the main valve or supply to your home (usually located in the basement or laundry room of the house).
Open all faucets – By opening all the faucets, inside and outside of the house, all water will drain from the pipelines.
Turn off the heat source (or boiler) and water heater – In most cases, you can turn off the furnace by switching off the electrical power supply. If your water heater is gas, turn off the gas valve. If the water heater is electric or oil, turn off the power at the switch.
Drain the water heater – Discharge the tank into the floor drain until it is empty. If there is not a floor drain, connect a garden hose to the tank and run it to the outside of the house.
Remove as much water as possible from toilets – Flush toilets and try to remove all of the water from the tank and the toilet bowl. If some water remains, add antifreeze to prevent any water from freezing and cracking the toilet.
Check sink and tub drains – Add some antifreeze to each one to prevent water from freezing and cracking the traps.
Prevent Freezing Pipes
The most important thing to do before you leave home for an extended stay during the winter months is to remove water from within the pipes. This will prevent them from freezing. If a pipe freezes, and then bursts, it can cause costly damage to your home. This is definitely not the nightmare you would like to encounter when you return from your relaxing vacation. In order to prevent freezing pipes, follow the guidelines listed:
Turn your heat down, not off. Keep your heat set to a minimum of 60 degrees while you are away to protect pipes against the cold.
Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to the warmer home’s temperatures.
Inspect the exterior of the house and seal any visible cracks with caulk or spray foam.
Insulate pipes that are vulnerable to freezing wit insulation sleeves or slip-on foam pipe insulation. Plastic piping is more resilient to freezing than old copper or steel pipes.
Insulate the crawl space and block all vents with cardboard or wood that lead to the outside.

5-STAR GOOGLE REVIEWS FROM OUR CUSTOMERS
Everyone at Zeek Plumbing was so kind and helpful. My heated driveway had a broken pipe but Steve, Rich, and the whole team went above and beyond to repair this as quickly as possible. I highly recommend their business for any plumbing issues you may have.
I’m a new homeowner and didn’t know what to expect when I had Zeek over to help me with a problem I had with a new washing machine connection when I moved in. Not only did they help with the connection, they spent time to explain my heating system to me. Now, two months later they have been to my home for two other problems that came about. While I wasn’t excited about having to spend money, they kept my budget in mind and were more than fair. I have nothing to but good things to say about their work, the people in their office and the people that have visited my home. I recommend them highly.
Steve and his team are the best of the best. He was so responsive and so caring!!!! Within a very short amount of time he sent us 2 of his team members (Rich and Oliver) who were outstanding. Extremely competent, knowledgeable, smart, fast, polite, and caring. We recently moved into the area and are so blessed to have found them. Highly recommend them!!!
The gentlemen from Zeek Plumbing were very professional and thorough in trying to determine the source of our problem. They had all the necessary parts with them to fix the problem and left everything very tidy after they finished the repair.
Tim and RJ were responsive polite and clean. Did a great job very quickly keeping my costs to the minimum they could be.
We called Zeek Plumbing when our office toliet backed up. They came right out and took care of the problem in a very professional manner. They did have to make a second trip, but did so promptly and got the problem solved. We would definitely recommend Zeek Plumbing.
I had a sewer line leaking in the basement where flooring and part of a wall had to be removed. They also had to remove a toilet and replace that connection to the sewer line. .The pipes were repaired, concrete repaired and toilet reinstalled. This was a big job. They knew exactly what they were doing and the repair is all done. They were easy to schedule with, courteous and professional. Highly recommend!!
